Who is Julia Macfarlane?

Julia was born in Indonesia on 6 July 1990 under the zodiac sign of Cancer, and holds both British and Indonesian nationalities – she came under the spotlight after she started working as a reporter for ABC News.

Early life and education

Julia spent most of her childhood in Jakarta in Indonesia with her Scottish father and her Indonesian mother, but she rarely speaks about her parents or her siblings – she attended the British International School in Jakarta, and after matriculation enrolled at Dover Court International Preparatory School in Singapore. Her next stop was Ampleforth College in England at which she studied English Literature, Fine Art, Philosophy and Theology from 2004 to 2007, when she enrolled at the University of Saint Andrews and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in English Literature in 2011.

She had a dream of becoming a journalist ever since she was a kid, and was looking up to and always spoke about wanting to be just as him – David is a famous naturalist and a popular broadcaster.

Career in the broadcasting industry

Julia had to finish her internship before she could work full-time, and she therefore started working for Sky News in June 2012 and stayed with them for two months, in charge of producing their program which aired from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. In July 2012, Julia switched to CNN but working as a freelancer, in charge of choosing who to invite as a guest onto their programs, but stayed with them for only three months until September 2012, when she went to work in Lebanon. While there, she mostly worked in Palestinian refugee camps such as Ain el Helweh, Rashidieh, and Nahr el Bared, and in Beirut and Tripoli while shooting an independent documentary movie to November 2012 – she also did some footage for the BBC News in December of the same year.

In February 2013, Julia went back to the UK and started working for the BBC World Service as a broadcast journalist and radio reporter, writing and producing their summary of news while also working on programs including “Newshour”, “World Briefing”, “World Update”, and “The World Tonight”. She produced and wrote new stories, edited and mixed tapes, and producing for their live programs – she stayed with BBC World Service for one year and a half before switching to BBC News in June 2014. She started working as their TV Journalist for their news broadcasts at six and ten o’clock, with a great team of award-winning journalists and editors – their most important coverage was of the UK General Election in 2015.

She left the station in December 2015 and began working as a producer and organizer of Political Newsgatherings at Millbank in Westminster – during the six months at that position, she covered the EU Referendum and all the political news in 2016 for national news, while also collaborating with BBC’s political correspondents and editors. She soon started working for the BBC World News again, as their producer and reporter on their award-winning international news channel.

Since January 2018, Julia has been working as a reporter and weekend correspondent for the in London – she is currently reporting international news on the ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight” shows. She is also part of many groups including “The Radio Academy”, “Middle East Associations”, “Al Jazeera English”, and “St Andrews University Alumni”.

“Forbes” business magazine named Julia one of the “30 under 30 Europe in Media and Marketing” in 2018.

ABC News

is part of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) which is owned by the Disney Media Network which is subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. Its main program is “ABC World News Tonight with David Muir” which airs every day while its other programs include “Good Morning America” talk show, “Nightline”, “Primetime” and “20/20” newsmagazine series, and their political affairs program entitled “This Week with George Stephanopoulos”.

The station was founded 73 years ago on 15 June 1945, and goes by the slogans “See the Whole Picture”, “Everyday More Americans”, and “Choose ABC News, America’s #1 News Source” – its studios are located on Times Square in New York City.

Dangerous situations

Even though BBC is taking good care of their reporters’ safety, there are some things which you cannot predict. Julia had to do one week-long hostile environment training when she was – she was once caught in riots and tear gas in Beirut which didn’t make her feel as she was in danger, but was rather just experiencing high adrenaline. She was also very close to a suicide bombing once, as she was just around the corner but apparently didn’t understand how serious it was until she had to cover the story for BBC Radio’s “From Our Own Correspondent” show.

Other interests

Julia loves to spend her free time outdoors, but doesn’t have that much time because of her demanding job – she is said to be very good at creative writing, is a public speaker, loves to debate numerous topics, and is in love with photography.

Personal life and relationships

Julia is one of those people who are quite secretive when it comes to their love lives – she currently appears to be single or is very good at hiding her boyfriend. It is only known that she dated a man in 2016, but it’s not known if it was a long relationship or not. She isn’t married and doesn’t have any kids.

Quotes

#Quote1The success of (1989) really opened doors. It showed that if you were working in animation you didn't necessarily have to be working in kids' television.2With any half-hour comedy, it kind of takes on its own life and finds itself.3When you are in a room and your job is to write jokes 10 hours a day, your mind starts going to strange places.4The good thing about Broadway is that you don't have to worry about an airdate. It gets done when it gets done.5The only problem is time.6[on (2012)] The last time Austria and Germany got together and co-produced something it was Hitler.7The only way it [criticism] gets to me is that it demonstrates a deterioration of the power of restrained, critical, rational thought that was once more ubiquitous in our society. In the sixties and seventies there was such a high regard in this country for the achievements of human beings in science, in technology, in space exploration. And in some ways we've turned into this wimpy, astrology-loving, angel-loving, pseudo-scientific culture that no longer has that ability. We've gotten lazy in our willingness to use our brains.
