She along with her siblings would later pursue careers as actors thanks to their father’s influence. After matriculating from high school, she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed her college education in 1984, soon after which she would appear in numerous films throughout the 1980,s mainly alongside her brother John Cusack. Some of her projects during this period included “Class”, “Sixteen Candies”, and “Grandview, USA”. In 1985, she became a cast member of the sketch show “Saturday Night Live”, in which she played several recurring characters including the socially inept Salena, and also did several celebrity impressions, including impressions of Jane Fonda, Brooke Shields and Queen Elizabeth II.

Academy Award Nominations and Prominence
In 1988, Cusack was cast in the romantic comedy film entitled “Working Girl”, starring alongside Melanie Griffith, Sigourney Weaver, and Harrison Ford, which proved highly successful, winning the Academy Award for Best Song while Joan and Sigourney were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She won an American Comedy Award for her role, and after a few more projects, she was nominated for her role in the film “In & Out” released in 1997; this was one of very few comedic gay movies at that time, starring Kevin Kline and Tom Selleck, and her performance in the film earned another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Two years after that role, she lent her voice in the animated film “Toy Story 2” as the character Jessie, and became a part of the “Toy Story” franchise, later reprising her role in “Toy Story 3”. Other projects she had in the next few years included the short-lived sitcom entitled “What About Joan?” which ran from 2001 to 2002, and a role in the film “School of Rock” in which she played head teacher Rosalie “Roz” Mullins.

Joan then narrated the animated series “Peep the Big Wide World”, before making a guest appearance in the show “Law & Order: SVU” in 2010. Her next big project was the series “”, in which she was cast in the role of Sheila Gallagher, the mother of Karen Jackson played by Laura Slade Wiggins. Joan would receive a lot of critical acclaim for her performance, and was nominated three times for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
She was also nominated two times for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, and won the award for her second nomination. She continues to take on acting projects including films such as “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, and is set to reprise her role in the 2019 release of the animated film “Toy Story 4”. She has also voiced Jessie in numerous video games and television specials featuring her character.

For her personal life, it is known that Cusack married attorney Richard Burke in 1996, and they have two children together, discovering that she was pregnant with her first child during the shooting of the 1996 film “Mr. Wrong”. Richard is known for being the CEO and President of the company called Envoy Global, Inc. She mainly resides in Chicago, Illinois though also owns a home in Three Oaks Township, Michigan. Joan’s siblings John, Susie, Ann and Bill have all tried their hand at acting at some point in their lives; she has appeared alongside her brother John Cusack , and the two are the most active among the siblings.
