Who is Henry Simmons?

Henry Oswald Simmons, Jr. was born on 1 July 1970 in Stamford, Connecticut, USA, and is an actor, best known for his role as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie in the television series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” He was also previously part of the police drama “NYPD Blue”, playing the role of Baldwin Jones.

Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings

Henry grew up in Stamford and his mother was a school teacher while his father was an IRS Revenue Officer. He grew up with three children including his twin sister. Early on, he developed a love for basketball and played the sport at his local high school, leading him to earn a basketball scholarship at Franklin Pierce University. During his time there, he also developed an interest in acting, and experimented in theatre. He graduated with a business degree and joined a Fortune 500 company in Stamford. However, he was dissatisfied, and decided that he wanted to as a career. He moved to New York City and studied acting, leading him to get small parts in films as well as television shows. He was a part of “Saturday Night Live”, “New York Undercover” and the film “Above the Rim” before he his first notable role in the soap opera “Another World”, as Tyrone Montgomery.

Career Prominence

“Another World” was a long running soap opera which Simmons joined for its last three seasons. It is set in the fictional town of Bay City, and is focused more on various families from different classes and philosophies. After his run with the show, he then entered the spotlight in the series “NYPD Blue”, playing Detective Baldwin Jones in the police procedural drama focused on the fictional 15th Precinct detective squad in Manhattan. The show received a lot of critical acclaim, thanks to the realistic portrayal of the characters professional and personal lives. The show started airing in 1993 though Simmons joined the cast during its last six seasons from 2000 to 2005.

Concurrently, Henry was involved in numerous other projects, including the film “Taxi” as Queen Latifah’s boyfriend, and several television films which lead to a role in another series – entitled “Shark” – a legal drama starring James Woods. He stayed with the show for three years, then in 2009 secured a lead role in the film entitled “World’s Greatest Dad”.

Later Career and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Two years later, Henry starred in the comedy series entitled “Man Up!”, a sitcom that ran for a few months but was cancelled because of low ratings, then worked on the film “From the Rough”, a sports drama based on Catana Starks, the first woman to ever coach a college men’s golf team. He was also cast in the thriller “No Good Deed” starring Idris Elba, which was a box office success, but received a negative critical reception.

In 2014, Henry’s popularity rose further when he was initially given a recurring role in the first few seasons – later upgraded to a series regular – in the television series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” – standing for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division – a show based on the Marvel Comics organization of the same name. The series shares a continuity with the Marvel films, and revolves around the character Phil Coulson with Clark Gregg reprising his role from the film series. While the show got high ratings but mixed reviews during its first seasons, reviews eventually improved while ratings dropped, actually leading to a more consistently positive output. Several episodes of the show crossed over with other films or television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Personal Life

For his personal life, it is known that Simmons has been married to actress Sophina Brown in 2010. The two worked together in the series “Shark”, though Sophina is best known for her role in the CBS series “Numb3rs” which she played the character Nikki Betancourt from 2008 to 2010. Simmons’ twin sister also works in the entertainment industry mainly as a casting director; she worked on the television series “New York Undercover” handling extras casting for many of its episodes.

The Wealth of Henry Simmons

How rich is Henry Simmons? As of late-2018, sources estimate a net worth that is over $2 million, earned through a successful career in acting. He’s also appeared in numerous films throughout his career now stretching over 20 years, and as he continues his endeavors, it is expected that his wealth will also continue to increase.
