Kellita Smith was born on 15 January 1969, in Chicago, Illinois USA, and is a comedian, model and actress, probably best known for her role in “The Bernie Mac Show”, in which she played Bernie Mac’s wife, Wanda McCullough. She stayed with the show for its entire run from 2001 to 2006.

While there isn’t a lot of information available about Kellita’s childhood, it is known that her family moved to Oakland, California where she would grow up, and would attend Santa Rosa Junior College, and completed an associated degree in political science. After completing her degree, she then pursued a degree in modelling and acting. She initially worked as a model before finding work in various theatrical productions.

One of her first theatrical projects was a production of “Tell It Like It Tiz”, after which she was cast in more theatre projects, including in the Los Angeles production of “No Place To Be Somebody”, a play is written by Charles Gordone and the first to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; her performance in the play earned her an NAACP Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996. She also had another NAACP Theatre Award nomination for her performance in “The Thirteenth Thorn”, and then another for “One Woman Two Lives”, which was premiered at the Imagined Life Theater.

Television Work

While doing theatrical work, Smith also made her television debut, in an episode of “In Living Color” in 1993. Soon, she would start making guest appearances in numerous popular television shows, including “The Parkers”, “3rd Rock from the Sun”, “NYPD Blue”, “Living Single”, and “Moesha”. She was also cast in recurring roles in other shows, such as “Martin” which was one of the highest rated sitcoms of Fox during the 1990s. She was also a part of “The Jamie Foxx Show” which was not a major success, but helped launch Foxx’s acting career. Other shows Smith was a part of included “Sister, Sister”, and “Malcolm & Eddie”.

In 2001, Smith began appearing in the sitcom “The Bernie Mac Show”, actually cast opposite Bernie Mac. The sitcom featured comic actor Bernie Mac as he tried to raise his sister’s three kids, with his own wife. In the show, Smith played the role of Bernie’s wife Wanda and the show would go on to run for five seasons from 2001 to 2006. Thanks to her performances, she was nominated four times for an NAACP Image Award. While doing the show, she also had other projects, including “Hair Show”, in which she starred alongside Mo’Nique.

After the Bernie Mac Show

After her run with the Bernie Mac sitcom, Kellita would continue finding on-screen acting roles, appearing in “King’s Ransom”, “Fair Game”, “Three Can Play That Game” and “Roll Bounce”.  She took a brief break from acting, returning in 2012 in the syndicated sitcom “The First Family”, in which she played the role of First Lady Katherine Johnson actually the first sitcom to air in first-run syndication since “Malibu, CA”. She was also cast as Roberta Warren in the post apocalyptic series entitled “Z Nation”, which is set three years into a zombie apocalypse, caused by a virus which has killed most humans.

She also appeared in 2015’s “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!”, and a few of her latest projects include guest appearances in “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. She has also played Detective Anderson in “The Man in 3B”, which is a mystery thriller based on a novel of the same name.

Smith’s romantic relationships have been kept out of the media spotlight, and there have not been any known relationships from her that have been made public – according to various sources, she is still single. She also mentioned that she suffered once from emotional eating, and gained some weight which made it difficult for her at public events, and she had to start a low-carb diet in order to drop her weight.
