Jenna grew up with an older brother, raised in Rochester by their father who worked as a chemist, but who also holds several patents. She attended Brighton High School, then after matriculating in 2004, moved to Boston to attend Suffolk University, and graduating with a degree in Psychology, then attending Boston University where she completed a master’s degree in Sports Psychology and Counseling.
She initially began her career as a writer for the female counterpart of Barstool Sports called StoolLaLa, but actually worked multiple jobs, such as bartending, working in a tanning salon, blogging, and also go-go dancing at nightclubs, managing to earn enough money to rent a shared $800 three-bedroom apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The following year, Marbles launched another video entitled “How To Avoid Talking To People You Don’t Want To” which became popular, accumulating millions of views as well – this was when she changed her name to reflect her current pseudonym – “Jenna Marbles” – after complaints by her mother that Jenna’s videos might give the wrong impression to potential employment being sought out by her mom; she took the name Marbles from her dog Mr. Marbles. Her popularity continued to skyrocket over the next few years.
