David, of Swedish and German ancestry through his mother, and Norwegian through his father, is the youngest child of four, born to Diane Marlys and Richard Harold David Bromstad. He went to Wayzata High School, where he showed interests in art and design, and expressed his desire to become a Disney animator. As a result, right after high school he moved to Sarasota, Florida, where he enrolled at the Ringling College of Art and Design.

Career Beginnings
Following his successful completion of college studies, David fulfilled his dream and found a spot for himself at Disney. Unfortunately, he was laid-off by the company, and soon afterwards started his own company, Bromstad Studio, which focused on designing children`s fantasy bedrooms. Gradually he improved and his business took him to Miami Beach, wanting to expand his area of expertise and become a part of HGTV. He auditioned for “Design Star”, a competition show of which he was subsequently named the winner, and as a prize he was given his own show, and also received a car from the network.
